Historic restaurants in St Albans

The "Waterend Barn - JD Wetherspoon" in St Albans is a remarkable restaurant and pub, distinguished by its historical architecture and its affiliation with the well-known JD Wetherspoon chain. It consists of two former listed barns from the 16th and 17th centuries, originally located in other parts of Hertfordshire and brought to St Albans in the 20th century. The larger barn was built around 1610 by Sir John Jennings and was once situated next to Water End House near a ford across the River Lea. Later, it was dismantled and rebuilt in the town center of St Albans, where it initially served as a tea room before being taken over by Wetherspoon and transformed into a pub in 2005. This history gives the place a unique aura that blends tradition with modernity.

Best British pub dishes

Culinary-wise, Waterend Barn offers a wide range of classic British pub dishes with international influences, typical of the Wetherspoon chain. Especially popular is the "Traditional Breakfast," a hearty meal featuring sausages, bacon, eggs, grilled tomatoes, and toast, starting the day the British way. The "Fish and Chips" also stands out – crispy fried fish with golden chips and a side of mushy peas, capturing the essence of British comfort food. For meat lovers, there is the "Aberdeen Angus Steak," a juicy piece of beef served with a selection of sides and appreciated for its solid preparation. For dessert, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding," a sweet warm cake with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream, provides a traditional ending. The kitchen emphasizes fresh ingredients and also offers vegetarian options that round out the menu.

Wetherspoon pub experiences

The ambiance in Waterend Barn is characterized by the high, open rafters of the historical barns, creating a rustic yet spacious atmosphere. The interior is divided into several areas, including a central bar section and separate seating areas suitable for diners as well as guests who simply want to drink. A prominent fireplace adds warmth and coziness, especially in the colder months, while the decor with wooden furniture and subtle lighting creates an inviting mood. In the summer, a small outdoor area offers the opportunity to enjoy meals outside. The atmosphere can become particularly lively on weekends when the pub is busy, which is typical for Wetherspoon locations.

Traditional British breakfast St Albans

The service is often described as friendly and efficient, with staff striving to make a good impression despite sometimes high foot traffic. The drinks menu is another highlight, featuring a wide selection of real ales that change regularly, along with popular beers like Greene King Abbot or Sharp’s Doom Bar. Guest ales from smaller breweries complement the offerings, making Waterend Barn also attractive to beer enthusiasts. In addition to dining in, there is the option to order food via the Wetherspoon app or utilize takeaway options, catering to the needs of a modern audience.

Building, like many Spoons, was very good. Stock management, not so much, I ordered on the App only to be told that what I ordered hadn't arrived yet, really??? Absolutely Dumbfounded and spoiled my evening

It's a Wetherspoons so you know what to expect, well priced drinks and food, wide variety of drinks and food to choose from. This particular pub is housed in a large historic building, various areas to sit, by the log fire, bar area, dining area. Tables are cleaned quickly, staff are efficient and polite but not very chatty (but then the place is always busy so maybe they've not time to stop). Food arrives quickly, it is always hot and tastes good, it's not fine dining but a steak and a pint for around £10 is great value and appreciate not everyone wants cheap food, so don't eat here if that is you, but still enjoy the well kept beers and wines. The whole place could do with a little investment/refurbishment, it is a busy place and some of the furniture is looking a little tired, but perhaps adds to it's charm?

Pretty good Wetherspoons pub with a good atmosphere and decent food. Only downside you queue to reach bar and does take a while for tables to be cleared
